Finding the right bar stool for your space doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. Bar stools are a popular way to bring style and functionality to a room, not only do they have to match the overall style and purpose of the room as a whole, they also have to be a good fit for the people using them. This is where it can get a little tricky. Anyone who has inadvertently selected the wrong bar stool knows either the hassle of returns or living with squished legs and a bad fit.
The most common height of a kitchen bench is usually around 90cm, although this can vary from 85-90cm with so many custom made kitchens and commercial spaces. Usually if your space measures around here than our 65cm stools would be suitable and would be a matter of deciding which stool would work well in your space.

The Correct Bar Stool Height For 90cm Counter
Then we start getting into higher benches such as outdoor bar spaces, commercial bars and high breakfast bars. These can range anywhere from 95 – 115cm. Once measured if your bench falls between these measurements than our 75cm stool range would be perfect.

Kitchen Island Chairs + Measurements To Know
We will notify you on events like Low stock, Restock, Price drop or general reminders so that you don’t miss the dealA kitchen island or a kitchen peninsula are both perfect spaces to add seating for casual dining. The most common kitchen seating question is often about the countertop height. Should the countertop be the same height as the workspace /prep zone or should it be elevated (also referred to as bar height)?
The elevated counter or bar height counter seating is usually about 41″-43″ off the floor to the countertop. This is approximately 6” higher than the standard 35″-40″ kitchen counter height typically used throughout the rest of the kitchen design. This kitchen seating design works well with bar stools that are 29″-30″ tall. The raised countertop is a great design feature to help conceal a busy and possibly cluttered workspace when in use.
As I mentioned earlier, the advantage of this increase in height is that it can conceal any clutter or dirty dishes from view. This is a good option to consider if you have a very open floorplan.
Standard Table Height Vs. Counter Height Vs. Bar Height
The bar height counter can also act as a sort of room divider, separating the kitchen from the rest of the space. The raised top also allows for family and guests to interact with the cook without actually being in the work area.
Another consideration with an elevated top is there is the potential for the counter to become a drop spot for mail, keys, and screens that may lead to visual clutter.
For families with small children, you’ll want to note with a raised, bar height countertop, the seating has to be taller, averaging around 30” off the floor. This stool height can be tricky for small children to use. Some also look at the raised, bar height counter as additional clean up due to the fact you are wiping down two countertops.
Tips On Choosing The Right Bar Stools
The standard countertop height in a kitchen is about 35″-40″ tall which works with typical counter-height bar stools and chairs are anywhere from 23” to 28” from the floor to the seat.
Keeping the kitchen island or peninsula all one with one counter height gives you one large continuous work surface. It is the ideal place to set up a buffet or spread out when working on that large project.

With the lower, standard 35″-40″ high countertop shorter stools or chairs are needed which are easier for children and adults with mobility restrictions to navigate.
Bar Stool Height Tips And Ideas For Your Dining Area
The counter height seating at the kitchen island does make everything visible in the kitchen, including those dirty dishes. If there is a sink on the kitchen island the potential for splashes and water spills is greater without a backsplash to contain the mess.
There are pros and cons to both options that depend on how you want your space to look and function. Choosing counter height or elevated, bar height seating in the kitchen island or peninsula is a design element that requires some thought.

The standard height for most counter height stools is between 65cm – 75cm. Ensure when pairing with a kitchen counter, the measurement from the top of the counter stool to the underside of the surface is between 15cm and 25cm.
A Guide To Barstools And Counter Stools
The standard height for most bar stools is between 75cm – 85cm. When pairing with a tall or commercial bar, ensure the measurement from the top of the bar stool to the underside of the surface is between 20cm – 30cm.
The standard height countertop for most domestic kitchens is 90cm. Look to pair with stools that are no less than 15cm and no more than 25cm from the top of the stool to the underside of the counter.
Before you make your purchase, you should pay a mind to the correct spacing of your bar stools to prevent them from looking too overcrowded or too sparse. Moreover, bar stools positioned too closely together will mean you feel claustrophobic at the dinner table as well.
A Guide To Choosing The Right Bar Stool
Whether you’re relaxing with the family around the kitchen breakfast bar or catching up with emails whilst perched aside the kitchen counter, your kitchen stools should be there to keep you comfortable during prolonged periods of use.
Professionals that work from home whilst seated at the countertop for sustained periods should opt for a backrest. A backrest will aid good posture due to an upright, more ergonomic seating position. It will also provide a little more comfort during long sessions. If, however, your daily bar stool usage consists of an evening meal alone, a backless bar stool will more than suffice.

The biggest difference between hard and comfortable bar stools is often the appearance. Soft squidgy stools are comfortable over prolonged periods but can so often look a little bulky and cumbersome in the home.
Kitchen Bench & Bar Stool That Suits Living Space
Hard bar stools (often wooden) can look far sleeker, minimalistic and more stylish but can become uncomfortable after a while. It’s a trade-off.
Roughly define your daily usage and go from there. For a couple of hours per session and over, opt for a padded version. For anything less, you should be fine with a wooden bar stool.
If your breakfast bar is hollow underneath, you have nothing to worry about here – skip to the next point. If, however, you have a solid wall beneath the surface you may want to read on.
Bar Stool Dimensions (standard & Different Sizes)
To maintain sufficient space beneath the bar or countertop for your legs to rest comfortably, aim to leave between 30cm – 35cm from the front of the bar stool to the upright where your knees will rest. Ensure if you are designing your own breakfast bar to leave a similar amount of space from the upright to the tip of the kitchen surface. Any less than a 30cm gap will mean you will have to sit further back, away from the action.
