I've been working on a organizational project in our basement that has escalated into a much bigger DIY project...per usual with me. :)
We needed a good solution for our games in the basement and I went with an easier version of the built in cubby storage in our old basement:

We didn't need nearly the storage we used to (not many toys left in this house, sniff!!), and I didn't want to do anything permanent just yet. As our kiddo gets older the way we use this space may change over time.
My 3 Favorite Ikea Storage Systems And How We Use Them In Our House
These are supposed to have four cubbies, but on the two end units I didn't add the smaller shelves that create the four spaces. Instead it's just a more basic bookcase so the longer games fit perfectly!
Before we had an IKEA nearby, we'd stop in on the way to or from Kings Island and it was usually a quick walk through to grab what I wanted. Since the one here in Indy opened I've been able to really explore the store and I love it even more than before!
Years back I wasn't so sure about the quality of their pieces, but over time I've come to trust that everything I get there is going to hold up and function well. I'm super pleased with EVERY item we've purchased from IKEA over the years.
Easy Basement Storage Ideas
One purchase I can't really speak to are their upholstered pieces. I think I'm in the minority, but I don't find their sofas and chairs to be very comfy. I hear they get more comfortable over time, but that's one thing I don't see myself purchasing.
Those round Stockholm mirrors were the perfect finishing touch to the tile wall. I SO wished I could use them again in his new bathroom, but the vanity isn't as wide. These mirrors are big! The frame comes out on the bottom a bit, so you can use it as a little shelf. :)
Next up -- their butcher block. I used it in a few places in our old house, including the DIY built in bench in our white and blue mud room makeover:
My Favorite Ikea Pieces And How We Use Them
It's very inexpensive as far as butcher is concerned, and warms up a space beautifully. It always stained nicely and held up great!
Next up -- their dressers. I showed you the one in my closet when I shared how I organized my jewelry and shoes:
We also have one in my husband's closet too. People fear the IKEA assembly instructions, I know. When you pull everything out of the box it can be intimidating, but it's not that bad. I'm a nerd that kind of enjoys putting furniture together though. ;)
Best Basement Organization Ideas
I particularly like the Hemnes line of dressers and furniture (the dresser above is one). They have a simple, classic design that goes well with nearly every style. I used the tall Hemnes cabinet with glass doors for our master bathroom. It provides so much storage!:
What I really love about IKEA furniture is how easily you can add your own touches to make it work perfectly in your home. Because so many of their pieces are a simpler design, they are easily dressed up. You can see how I did just that with the Tarva dressers I turned into nightstands:
I have SO many smaller favorites too, but I'll save that for a future post. I did share a round up of my IKEA faves $10 and under here:
Maximizing Storage In A Mudroom Using Ikea Cabinets
I'm sure I'm forgetting something! But this is a good list -- do you have any of these? Have you had good luck with IKEA furniture? Do you have a favorite product? I've been very pleased over the years. It's a fun place to explore for sure -- just make sure you have some time. When searching for garage storage solutions, we wanted to find the best garage shelving that looked clean and modern with good value for money. We came across the Ikea Bror shelving units for our garage organization project.

Clever Ikea Storage Hacks For Every Room In Your Home
We considered the Workpro 5-Tier Metal Shelving Unit for our garage but ended up purchasing these for our basement for storage! These were the best bang for the buck in terms of dimensions and load capacity. Each shelf can hold up to 800 lbs. spread across the shelf.
They’re deep enough for Costco bins, which end up sticking out a bit but we found it to be a pretty good solution for these affordable Costco bins!
These heavy duty shelving units were quick and easy to assemble with just a rubber mallet. We are very happy with these shelves and highly recommend them if you need to store a lot of bins in your garage!
Ikea Built Ins For Storage: Create A Wall Of Built Ins To Maximize Space!
The Walmart Muscle Rack 5-Shelf Steel Shelf Unit is a good option if you’re looking for solid, particle board shelves instead of wire shelves. This would be good if you need to store smaller items that may fall through wire shelves.
The Ikea Bror Shelving Unit is the exact shelving unit system we bought for our garage! Read our full blog post for all the details on cost, assembly, and our full experience with the Ikea Bror shelving.
If you’re looking for wall mounted garage shelves, the Amazon Fleximounts Garage Shelving with Hooks 2 Pack would be a good pick. These wall mounted shelves would free up the floor space below. They also include hooks to hang larger items like bikes or other outdoor equipment.
A Teenager's Room Offering A Sense Of Independence
The Home Depot Husky 4-Tier Industrial Duty Shelving Unit is the largest and strongest shelf we were considering. These would be great if you needed to store long items as they’re 77” wide. They also support 2500 lbs. per shelf. Definitely the best option if you have very large or heavy items to store.
Last August, we decided to (finally) tackle a much-needed garage makeover so that the space could actually function as a workspace for Tim to work on his car.
The main problem was not having garage shelves that maximized our space. We had two short shelves that were meant for temporary use when we first moved in and it ended up with random junk piled on it with no organization system at all.
The Best Stuff From Ikea, According To Wirecutter's Obsessive Staff
It was definitely time to purge items we didn’t use anymore, which really helped to clear out space and give us a better idea of what garage organization solutions we needed.
We wanted to find the best garage shelving that looked clean and modern with good value for money. At first, we considered using wall mounted garage shelving, but soon decided against it because it was going to be more work to look for studs, drill, and make sure the shelves would be strong enough.
Also, we wanted to maximize the entire wall space from floor to ceiling, and at that point decided to look for heavy-duty garage shelving that we could also take with us to our next house.
Our Organized Tool Storage In The Basement
We had a really good experience with the Ikea PAX closet system for our bedroom, so I was curious to see if Ikea had any good quality shelving units designed for garages. I searched on the Ikea website for heavy-duty garage shelving and came across the Ikea Bror shelving system.
I really liked that there were so many options for garage storage solutions to fit a variety of needs. Even better, the shelving came in not just black, but also white!
I absolutely love the customizability of the Bror planner and easily came up with our garage shelving design. I really liked that there were a few different shelving width and height size options to choose from.
Hejne 3 Sections/shelves, Softwood, 230x50x171 Cm
This was super important for us since our garage’s side wall, where the shelves would be placed, is pretty shallow and a lot of other garage shelf options I found previously were too deep to fit in that area.
My favorite part about using the Bror shelving units for our garage is being able to mix and match black cabinets to go with the white shelving! This gave our garage shelves a really unique modern look, while also getting the functionality of closed storage as well, which is a definite plus!
For our specific Bror configuration, the total cost before tax came out to be $594. Purchasing three Bror cabinets definitely bumps up the total cost, but for the look and function, we thought it was worth it.
Toy Storage Ideas
Building the shelves and cabinets was pretty simple just following the directions given by Ikea. The manual says that two people are needed to assemble the Bror, although Tim managed to do most of it by himself (I was in my first trimester and resting in bed while he worked on it haha). The only part I helped was attaching the cabinets to the shelving unit. The entire assembly was completed within one evening.
