Today’s LED technology offers a more energy-efficient, long-lasting and brighter option. The easiest way to achieve bright under cabinet lighting for your kitchen is to use LED Strips (or often also referred to as ‘tape’ lights).

Before you start with the installation, check where your next available power outlet is located. This will be the place for the Power Supply and the RGBW Dimmer and the starting point for your LED Strip.

First, measure how long the LED Strip should be and cut the Strip to the desired length. Then simply attach the self-adhesive LED Strip to the bottom of the cabinet. Place it towards the front to get your desired lighting result.
For the installation, connect the LED Strip with the RGBW Dimmer and the Power Supply. In this example, we placed the RGBW Dimmer and the Power Supply above our microwave to use the power outlet that was available there.

To focus light on the work surface and also light your backsplash, position the tape light an inch or two back from the front of the cabinet. This mounting position works best with dull or matte finished surfaces.
Install the LED tape lighting on the inside back of the cabinet lip frame with the LEDs facing towards your backsplash. This method helps eliminate unwanted light reflections and bright spots reflecting off your countertop. Because of the wide beam angle of the tape light, this mounting position will still provide ample lighting.
How To Choose And Install Led Strip Lights For Kitchen Cabinets
Drill a 1/2 in. hole through the cabinet side frame lips to allow the tape light to pass from one cabinet to another. When mounting on the back side of the front frame lip, use a multi-tool oscillating saw to make small vertical cuts in the dividers to create slots for the tape light to pass through.
Create a visual barrier to hide the LED lights with a piece of angle trim, quarter round molding, or any type of trim desired.
Most cabinet tops have uneven surfaces. To create beautiful, indirect uplighting over cabinets, simply mount the tape light on any rigid strip (e.g., thin lattice or corner guard molding) and place on top of cabinets. Angle the light strip position to achieve the desired illumination.
How To Install Under Cabinet Lighting In The Kitchen Using Led Light Strips
Try different mounting positions to get your desired lighting effect. For a seamless glow with no bright light spots, keep LED tape light strip at least 3/4 in. away from walls.
To test the position of the strip light installation before mounting, power the LED tape light and temporarily hold or tape into position with painter’s tape – do not remove the 3M paper backing. Do not stare directly at the LEDs.
Try various angles and positions to get the desired level of illumination and lighting appearance. If the LEDs create undesirable bright spots on walls or reflections, reposition the tape light strip farther away from surfaces or try a different mounting angle.

We’ve been hard at work in the kitchen installing some beautiful under cabinet lighting! Finding the right light setup was more complicated than we expected, so we wrote a whole post about the important things to consider when choosing supplies. (I recommend reading that one first.)
How To Install Under Cabinet Led Strip Lighting?
Once we finally had all of the pieces we needed, it was time for installation! Since Donnie was the primary under cabinet lighting installer, I’m going to let him walk you through the process.
By far the hardest part of installing under cabinet lighting in the kitchen using LED light strips is buying the supplies. The actual installation is fairly straightforward, but the hard thing is that most kitchen setups and layouts are different. My installation will not match your installation perfectly, but hopefully this guide will help give you the confidence to tackle this project in your own kitchen.
We purchased our supplies from Flex Fire LEDs. I had a few questions about compatibility between light strips, connectors, and mounting channels and they helped me find the right product with their live chat feature. Here are the supplies we ended up using:
Create Stunning Lighting Effects With Govee Rgbic Led Strip Lights
I knew going into this project that I would have two “sections” of LED lighting. The upper cabinet on the right side has a switch controlled outlet that was installed at our request by the builders.
The corner cabinet on the left side of the kitchen also has an outlet controlled by the same switch by the sink.
If you don’t have outlets in your cabinets already, you may need to hire an electrician to install them before proceeding with the rest of this project.
Easy Diy: How To Install Under Cabinet Led Strip Lighting
In our house, the oven and microwave separates the two sections of cabinets. I decided not to try and bridge this gap but instead have two separate lines of LED lights. The need for a second transformer does add to the cost, but it’s minimal.
Once everything was out, I could better envision where the transformer would plug in, where the wires would run, and what holes I would need to drill.
I have to admit that when ordering all the supplies for this project, I was still a bit confused about how everything fits together.
