As we’re sure you’re aware, being a great hostess isn’t easy. And for us, the key starts with good design. Today’s topic? The dining room. Every year, the same design dilemmas come up again and again when it comes time for special occasions: How big of a dining room table do I need? and How many people can fit at my table in my formal dining room? You want to make sure your dining space is cozy… but also that everyone has plenty of room.
You don’t want anybody to have to squeeze between the chairs and the wall, or have someone trip over the rug. Between all of the siblings and cousins and kids, friends and family, it can be a bit hectic. That’s why we put together this infographic that’ll help you create a perfectly scaled dining room with perfectly arranged dining room furniture as the focal point:

The trick of the trade is to leave at minimum 36 inches between the edge of your dining table and the wall or other furniture. Keeping at least 45 inches between your table and the dining room entryway will also keep from any bottlenecking in and out during dinnertime. When deciding on a rug, add about 2 feet on each side of the dining table to achieve an “optimal” size.
Dining Table Size Guidelines
Round dining room tables create a more intimate environment than other shapes, so they’re great for family gatherings or dinner parties with your best of friends where everyone’s wine glasses are full. Round tables are also a great option for kitchens or spaces without a designated dining room.
A caution for the round table: If you have a large dining room, a large round table does make it difficult for guests to talk across the table. If you prefer to entertain for large groups, a rectangular or oval table may be your better option. You can also draw on themes from your living room and echo the look of a favorite accent chair, or set of bar stools.
Rectangular dining tables are the go-to table shape for any dining area. It’s practical, fits easily in a dining room, and most importantly, it looks great. As a nice in-between when it comes to dining room furniture, the oval table is the more unusual dining room table shape, but if your space allows it, it can serve as an elegant contour to your room.
How To Choose The Right Dining Table Size
Once you have selected your dining table and chairs, it will then be easy to move on to other dining room decorating ideas–like choosing a light fixture, choosing a pendant light, adding a china cabinet, and more.

Dining Table Dimensions: Choosing The Right Shape And Size
How many people will fit at my table? This is determined by several factors like table size and shape, chair width, table leg placement, tabletop overhang, etc. You’ll need to consider all these things, but here’s a general breakdown of table sizes and corresponding seating capacities:
The long sides or edges of your table top. This is the main measurement that will determine your table size and seating capacity. We offer customizable tables between 72 – 120 inches long (in 2 inch increments), or you can place a custom order if you need specific, unique dimensions.

We recommended allowing 36 inches or more between the edge of your table and the wall or other furniture. This leaves room for someone to walk behind the chairs while others are seated.

Make sure there is enough room to pull chairs out from the table. You’ll need at least 18 – 24 inches clearance just to pull chairs out.

If you’re planning to place a rug under your table, it should be large enough to fit both the table itself and ideally all the legs of the chairs. To do this, plan for your rug to extend 24 inches or more from each side of the table.
Example: For a table 6 feet long (72 inches) x 3 feet wide (36 inches), the rug should be approximately 10 feet long (120 inches) x 7 feet wide (84 inches) to give you the most ideal rug space for your table.
Whether you’re considering a chandelier, pendant lighting, or some other light fixture, it should be hung approximately 30 inches above the tabletop to provide adequate lighting and keep sight lines open across the table.

Dining tables can range anywhere from 30” to over 50” wide. Most tables are made with a width ranging from 36” to 45” - this leaves room to place large platters, bowls or center pieces along the center. For smaller rooms, 30 inches is the bare minimum depth you need to ensure there’s enough space to sit people on both sides of the table. Where space isn’t a constraint, increasing the width beyond 45” is ok for longer tables, seven or eight feet and longer.
The question we hear more than any other is how many chairs will fit around the table. As a general guideline you should allow no less than 24 inches for each person at a table. Depending on your space and table size, that measurement can vary, but don’t go too far below 24 inches. Keep this in mind when you are selecting a table for your space to determine how many people you would like to sit.
