How To.Install Drawer Slides

We will walk you through the process of the side mount installation quickly, easily and efficiently in just 6 steps. (You will need: drill, carpenter’s square)

The first thing we want to do is grab one of the drawer slides in hand and separate the drawer profile slip from the slide by pressing the trigger disconnect lever

How

The next thing we want to do is determine the placement of your drawers. Use a pencil to mark the place where you want to attach the slide. (note: make sure to check the top sides and bottom of the drawer for clearance.)

Now we are going to attach the cabinet drawer slides. Align the bottom edge of the first slide above the line, as shown. Position the front edge of the slide behind the mark near the face of the cabinet.

Now you will use a drill to pre-drill the holes you will need to attach the slides to the wood. Holding the slide firmly in place, push the extension forward until both sets of screw holes are visible. Using a drill/driver, drill shallow pilot holes in one screw hole near the front and back of the slide. Using the screws provided, mount the slide to the inside of the cabinet. Repeat to mount the second drawer slide on the opposite side of the cabinet.

Hold the drawer level in front of the cabinet. Place the ends of the slides attached to the drawers into the tracks inside the cabinet. Pressing evenly on each side of the drawer, slide the drawer into place. The first slide inward can sometimes push a bit tougher, but once the tracks are engaged, the drawer should slide back out and in smoothly.

I find I never have to worry about the drawer tipping out or binding the way I do with other systems. With that said, they are also extremely easy to install. Measuring from the inside floor of the cabinet, mark a height of 8¼ inches near the front and back of each side wall. Using the marks and a straightedge, draw a level line across the wall on each inside wall of the cabinet. Make a mark on each line that’s 7/8 inch from the front edge of the cabinet. This allows room for the thickness of the drawer front plus an 1/8-inch inset.

Holding the slide firmly in place, push the extension forward until both sets of screw holes are visible. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to mount the second drawer slide on the opposite side of the cabinet.

Using a tape measure, mark the center of the height of the drawer box on its outer side walls. (Note: this drawer is shown without the drawer face, which will be installed at the end of this tutorial.) Using a straightedge, mark a horizontal line along the outside of the drawer box on each side.

Remove the detachable section of each drawer slides, and place it on the corresponding drawer side. Position the slides so that they are centered on their corresponding line and flush with the face of the drawer box, as shown.

How

Apply wood glue to the face of the drawer box. With the drawer closed, position the drawer face with equal gaps along the top and side edges. Using clamps, secure the drawer face against the drawer box.

Carefully slide the drawer open, and then drive 1-inch screws through the holes in the drawer box and into the backside of the drawer face to secure it in place. With Slideology 101, we sought to help readers understand the basics of ball-bearing slides and linear track systems. Line up your cabinet member just below your cabinet’s drawer opening centerline — this is the spot where you’ll have optimal stability.

You may have to set back your drawer or cabinet member depending on whether your drawer has a front face on it and whether that front face is set inside the cabinet. Generally, we recommend you set at least a 1/8” setback on your drawer member so your slide has proper engagement of the rear detent (which secured the drawer closed), but your need may vary.

Next, you’ll mount your cabinet member. Start by tightening a screw into each of the horizontal slots. Adjust the depth of your members using the horizontal slots, pictured above. Once you determine the right horizontal adjustment, secure the member into place by inserting a screw into the each of the fixing holes pictured above.

You should have one screw mounted into each of the horizontal slots. Depending on the length of your slide, you may be able to leave screws inside those slots and just insert one screw into a small-diameter hole.

How

With the cabinet member installed, let’s move to installing the drawer member on the drawer side. As with the cabinet member, you’ll line up the inner member just below the centerline of the drawer

Once lined up, tighten screws into each of the vertical slots. Determine the right vertical adjustment via the cam adjust, secure the member into place with a screw inside each of the fixing holes, shown above.

Pull the ball retainers of the intermediate member forward. This will help avoid misaligning (and damaging) the drawer members when you re-connect them.

Once your retainers are fully extended outward, insert your drawer. You’ll feel resistance when pushing the drawer fully closed—push firmly to reconnect the members.

In theory, it’s super simple: screw the slides in where they need to go, and move on with your life. I believed that right up until the first time I tried it.

How

As I struggled to keep both slides at the proper height while trying to attach the drawer to the slides in a way that would keep it level and moving smoothly inside the cabinet, I realized how fantastically frustrating the job actually is. Many companies sell jigs and tools that will help with the process, but you can save yourself some cash and time by learning how to install drawer slides with just a couple of pieces of scrap plywood to use as spacers.

This method only works for side-mount drawer slides, though. If you’re using undermount, Jon Peters of Longview Woodworking has an excellent video that will show you how to build your drawers and install the slides.

Always start with square drawers, whether you bought them, built them, or are doing repairs. If the boxes are wonky, installing slides will be a nightmare. Whatever the case, your drawers should be 1 inch narrower than the opening. It’s better to err on the side of a 16th of an inch smaller rather than too large, because most drawer slides have adjustable tabs that can close gaps, but they can’t get thinner.

1. Determine the height of the slides from the bottom of the cabinet. The easiest way to install drawer slides is flush with the bottom of the drawer. This way, you only have one height measurement to keep track of. The bottom of a drawer should sit about an eighth of an inch above the bottom edge of the opening it’ll sit inside—this will allow it to
