Gather around the kitchen island! VADHOLMA is the home’s given meeting point and perfect when you cook together. Plenty of storage ‒ and the generous butcher block gives you a robust workspace.
Layer construction adds stability and makes the countertop less sensitive to humidity, thus, less likely to bend, split or crack than solid wood.

The countertop has an end-grain design that gives it a rustic charm that complements traditional kitchen styles. The expression is enhanced by design on the edges.

Great Kitchen AdditionMaryI recently purchased this for my kitchen. It has been great to have the extra space. The only negative is that the top is faux butcherblock. It looks slightly tacky and I'm just not sure yet how it will hold up.4

Smallish kithen and wanted more space to food prep and baking etc. I was orignally looking at another Island not on but it's been out of stock for over 1 year. I was able to have my good friend and neighbor to put it together and I LOVE IT!5

At we have a tradition of trying to utilize materials in the best possible way. For our countertops in thick veneer it means that we combine old craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods. It makes the countertops easier to install, more stable and more resistant to humidity compared to solid countertops. And since we use the whole tree – even the crooked branches and the small twigs – we can save natural resources too.
Wood is a precious natural resource. Even though it’s a renewable material it needs to be handled responsibly. One way to do it, is to use the wood more efficiently. That’s what we do with our kitchen worktops in thick wood veneer.

“At we have a tradition of trying to utilize the materials we have in the best possible way, ” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen worktops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’
“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer, ” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our worktops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid worktop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer worktops.

Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a worktop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen worktops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.
An Ikea Kitchen Island Design Gave A Big Boost To Her Kitchen
A veneer is a thin wooden sheet attached to things like particleboard to add a durable surface and a natural wood look – so we enjoy the many benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common veneer types are birch, ash, oak, and beech, and we’ve made a special UV lacquer that helps preserve the wood's natural structure. A benefit with a slightly thicker veneer is how you can repair and sand the surface if it’s damaged to give furniture a longer and more beautiful life. That’s kind of how I felt ever since we had our kitchen remodelled back in 2012. Everything felt far away from where you needed it, there seemed to be less work top space even though there was more. Stuck with locations for oven / sink / fridge, there was nothing to be done about the so-called triangle of optimum ergonomics.
All nice and airy but see that table – it just didn’t feel right. It was the perfect location to work at but too low and chairs always seemed to be in the way. And in the corner, the wooden dresser bought as a wedding present and loved so much, didn’t match at all and was blocking the old back door (that we didn’t brick up incase one day we knocked the entire wall through).
Our traditional Victorian house isn’t the smallest of its type but furniture never seems to fit quite how you’d want it. There’s always something that sticks out, a door in a daft place or a maddening 2-3cm more than will fit in a space.
Reasons Why Ikea Kitchen Island Is A Superior Choice
So after much buttering up of the husband (who is sick to death of my furniture dilemmas), we bought an IKEA kitchen island.

The Stenstorp IKEA kitchen island. I love it. The wooden top has brought the heart back to a kitchen that remodelled in white felt slightly too clinical.
This, the larger version of Stenstorp kitchen island costs £200. It’s an extremely heavy and sturdy piece of furniture and requires two people to carry and assemble it. The warm wooden top is made from solid oak and had to be treated with wood oil. The instructions suggested to do this on alternate days for many weeks but we found 3 treatments over the course of 10 days to be adequate.
Kitchen Island Storage Ideas To Maximize Your Usable Space
One side is for sitting at and the other has two metal shelves now filled with ovenware and casserole dishes that are easy to access whilst cooking (shown below).
We teamed our Stenstorp kitchen island with three white Ingolf IKEA barstools at £45 each. Our white Bjursta dining table and the vintage dresser were relocated to the dining room along with a child’s version of the Ingolf chair visible in the “before” picture.
Instead of never having anywhere convenient to put anything down, it now feels like the kitchen island is right there where you need it and the perfect height to work at. It’s great to cook comfortably whilst Ted sits on a stool doing his homework.

The compromise was that whoever sits at the end (usually Ted) has to perch with knees to one side of the middle panel. But my husband often eats after us during the week so this arrangement suits us fine for breakfasts. At weekends, or if we have guests, we eat at the big table instead.
