Is Ikea Furniture Real Wood

We’re always looking for ways to make the most of the wood we use. Find out how we challenge ourselves to improve how we design wood-based products.

One of the wonderful qualities of wood is that there are so many things you can do with it. It can be sanded and shaped, laminated, bent and folded. Or why not recycled, recomposed and moulded? It works in the bedroom and bathroom, the living room and library. You can walk on it, sleep on it, eat off it. You can use it to store things and stir things. At , we’re always looking for new ways to make the most of this precious resource and we constantly challenge ourselves to innovate and improve how we design wood-based products.

Wood is part of our Scandinavian design heritage. For around 80 years designers and product developers have been inspired by the many qualities of the material and created hundreds of beautiful, functional and affordable products that make life at home a little bit easier. And our current crop of designers is just as happy to be working with wood.

Ikea Furniture Assembly: Ikea Building Tips

At , we’re driven to create more from less. When we design our products this way, not only do we use wood even more mindfully, we also make them lighter and easier to transport. For example, using hollow wooden legs on our RÖNNINGE table we can make eight legs from the same amount of material previously used to make just one.

Assembling multiple layers of veneer in special moulds and pressing and gluing them together allows us to create curved components. FRÖSET easy chair uses bent wood in different thicknesses. The back rest is thinner so it flexes, while the seat is thicker to provide support where you need it most.

In FY23, our products contained lots of different and efficient ways of using virgin and recycled wood material. Particle board, a strong composite material, represents approximately half of all the wood-based material used in our products in FY23.

Figures do not include different paper qualities, bamboo and rattan materials used in products, which in total are representing 6% of the total volume.

Did you know that half of our wood-based products including bookshelves, wardrobes, kitchen frames and TV benches such as PAX, MALM, BILLY, NORDLI and METOD are made from particle board? Particle board uses all the pieces of wood which are left over from the production line or are not suitable for solid wood products – even the sawdust – and turns them into a whole new wood-based material. And the best part? When a particle board based product reaches the end of its life it can be recycled and used all over again.

As part of our Forest Positive Agenda to drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways, we are one of the first in the furniture industry to encourage our suppliers to increase their share of recycled wood used in particle board production. Today, the average share of recycled material in particle board is 30% and some of our suppliers are already only producing particle board made from recycled wood.

What Ikea Furniture Is Made Of: Sustainable & Affordable Materials

Our ambition is to be a circular business by 2030. In line with this goal we are committed to designing all our products with circular capabilities. This means designing every product from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured and eventually – after all other possibilities have been explored – recycled. It also means using only renewable or recycled materials and providing new solutions for our customers to prolong the life of products and materials.

Since it was launched in 1978, more than 120 million BILLY bookcases have been sold. Today, BILLY is still one of the best-selling and best-known products. In FY22, BILLY was redesigned to improve its circular capabilities. Shifting to paper foil and reducing plastic means that most materials used to produce the new BILLY will come from renewable sources. The new design also has snap fittings on the back panel instead of nails, so it can be disassembled, reassembled and taken with you through the different stages of your life.Wood is the material most commonly associated with  furniture, and for good reasons. We love working with wood not only because it’s part of our Scandinavian design heritage – wood is an excellent material from a design, quality and environmental perspective, provided that it comes from responsibly managed forests. Wood is also durable, renewable, recyclable – and beautiful.

Because wood is so important to , we work together with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) to take care of the world’s forests through responsible forest management, making sure we have forests for all, forever. By the end of 2020, we aim for all our wood to come from more sustainable sources which includes FSC certified and recycled wood. Today we have reached more than 91% of our goal.

How

Ikea Furniture Hacks

Since 2017, 100% of the wood we source from countries with a history of challenges related to forest management, comes from more sustainable sources.

We’re promoting responsible forestry methods. We do this to influence the industry and also to contribute to the important work of ending deforestation.

Oak is a strong hardwood that darkens beautifully with age. MÖRBYLÅNGA table top has a three-millimeter top layer of solid oak applied on particleboard – a resource-efficient way of using different wood materials in the same piece of furniture. The durable solid oak top layer makes every table unique, each with its own grain pattern and natural color variations.

Acacia is a durable and rot-resistant wood that works great for outdoor furniture, like our ÄPPLARÖ series. All acacia we use comes from FSC certified plantations. Together with our suppliers, smallholder farmers and partners like WWF, ensures that acacia is grown in a way that is better for the environment and the local communities.

Making more from less is part of the culture, and we always use resources efficiently. Regarding wood, every piece is cut and shaped so that waste is minimized in production while maintaining quality and durability. We constantly look for new and smarter ways to design and build our furniture to make sure our customers get the best possible product with the least impact on our planet.

We put responsible forest management at the core of our business. This means working to eliminate forest degradation and deforestation and to promote the importance of forest management beyond our own wood material needs. This is what we call being forest positive.

Forests house over two-thirds of known terrestrial species, and are home to 80% of terrestrial biodiversity. The FSC certification includes the social and economic well-being of workers and local communities who depend on the forest, as well as environmental and economic matters and decision making, in addition to covering logging practices.

We also work with WWF and other partners to combat illegal logging and promote responsible and transparent timber trade. Beginning with five forest projects in seven countries in 2002, today, we collaborate in 15 countries on a variety of projects. The aim is to support credible forest certification that benefits both people and the environment. The wood used in products comes from many locations around the world. Here you can learn where it grows and how much we use, as well as the types of wood we source. You can also find out how we make sure it comes from responsibly managed forests.

We have a comprehensive wood control system in place to make sure all the wood we use is responsibly sourced. Under no circumstances do we accept wood that does not meet our strict requirements. That means no sourcing of wood from, for example, illegally harvested areas, high conservation value forests that are not set aside for commercial logging, areas with social conflicts related to the forest or genetically-modified tree plantations. If we discover irregularities, we take immediate action.
