Ikea Gallery Wall Ideas

I love family photos and a large gallery wall is a great way to showcase them in your home. Gallery walls can be formatted to your style and aesthetics. We have an open foyer with a very large staircase so I designed an oversized IKEA gallery wall for the space using ribba picture frames. Here is how I did it!

I use Pages on my Mac for designing purposes. I used the shapes feature and made a mock-up of what I wanted. This is not to scale, but I put the frame measurements to help if you want to copy our design.

Gallery Wall (and How To Hang Ikea Ribba Frames)

I used several different styles of frames from Ikea. I also added a few frames from Target. Beware, if you plan on ordering your frames online, several of ours arrived damaged and broken. Ikea replaced them, however, it required a lengthy phone call. It may be best to visit the actual store and ensure your frames are not damaged.

Please note, I measured our actual frames and the measurements listed on the Ikea descriptions are a bit different. They possibly updated their sizing recently.

We used several different methods to hang our frames. Honestly, we used whatever we had in our home at the time. I love these Monkey Hook picture hangers because they are easy to maneuver. We also used framing kits and simple nails. If you want to secure the oversized picture frames from moving each time they are touched, you can use command strips on the backside.

Whether you’re looking for a wedding gallery wall, a behind-the-couch gallery wall, or some gallery wall templates, you’ve landed in the right place. Welcome to my gallery wall and picture frame series, where I show you how to get the most beautiful gallery walls on a budget. This is actually my fourth post in the series; so far I’ve made:

We all love a good #ikeahack, right? So today I’m showing you how to create a wedding photo gallery wall with IKEA Ramsborg frames. It of course doesn’t have to be a wedding photo gallery wall - it could be a gallery wall of family photos, an engagement shoot gallery wall, a travel gallery wall….well, you get the idea.

As always, I am using super affordable frames and elevating them instantly by swapping out the matting for some custom matting I designed with Custom Mat. If you love the current trend of large matting with small photos, this is how you do it on a budget.

I’m going to give you my exact process and measurements, so you can easily recreate this DIY on your own. Let’s get started!

For this above-the-couch gallery wall, I chose IKEA’s 16x20 Ramsborg frames. I saw these frames while shopping for my last gallery wall, and at just $23 Canadian (or $17 US), I knew I had to use them for my next project. The rustic wood frame is a total steal for the price and they look even better in person.

How

Diy Ikea Ribba Frames Gallery Wall

I started by measuring the wall I wanted to put the gallery wall on and envisioning what the frames would look like within that space. If you’re having trouble visualizing this, you can use painter’s tape (I did this on my last project here) or kraft paper to mark out the frames and play around with the configuration. I chose to go with 2 rows of three and to space out the picture frames 1.75 apart.

IKEA frames come with basic matting, but we are going to create our own in order to get the offset, oversized matting look. Below are the exact measurements I used for my 16x20 Ramsborg frames with room for an 8x12 photo. To get this exact look, just put the details below into Custom Mat’s interactive matboard designer tool.

Note that I wanted the photo slightly offset in the frame, which is why my top and bottom margins are different. If you’d prefer to have your photo centered, just set your vertical margins to 4.13 for both.

Custom Mat offers a quantity discount of up to 40% off, so the more mats you purchase, the bigger the discount. I ordered 6, so my mats came to just over $16 each. If you order 10 or more, you’ll get an even bigger discount. Bonus: they ship to Canada and the USA with free shipping over $49.

This is where it gets fun! Once your matting arrives in the mail, swap out the matting and see your frames transform before your eyes. In the photo below, the left is the Custom Mat matting and the right is the standard IKEA matting.

Honestly, this is the hardest part of the entire tutorial. When it comes to gallery walls, spacing is everything; I chose to evenly space my frames 1.75 apart (top to bottom and side to side).

Isn’t DIY the best?! Similar frame sets like this sell for over $900, and we just did it for under $250. If you make this gallery wall, please DM me on Instagram and send me photos; I love to see how you shop big and spend small with me.At long last, I have finally gotten around to completing something I’ve wanted to do since we first moved in to our house, which is to create a gallery wall of favorite art and photos that can be easily rotated and switched out whenever my decorating ADD kicks in.

Through this process, I discovered that I strongly prefer a random asymmetrical arrangement as opposed to a grid of frames.  I also found that while I do love the look of mismatched frames, I wanted a bit of continuity with the style and color of the frames and mats.  My final decision was to go with IKEA Ribba frames for their affordability and variety of sizes.  I chose black frames over white because the gallery wall is in our dining area, near a sea of black granite in the kitchen and across from a humongous black box of a TV in the great room, and I thought that it would balance it out.

IKEA is fairly far away from my house, so I wanted to be absolutely sure of a shopping list before I went to get the frames.  Naturally, I did what any obsessive compulsive over-planner would do – I created an excel spreadsheet.    I made each cell into a square shape by changing the column width; each cell represented one square inch.  Then, I found the specifications for each frame on IKEA’s website and drew them out with black, white, and tan shapes.  I made sure to “group” each frame’s shapes together so that they would all move together automatically as I copied and rearranged them.  Then I fiddled around with some different layouts.

The gray box behind them is the existing piece of artwork that I already had in the space, so I could visualize how much bigger it would be on the wall.  The one below was the winner, with the exception of a 5″ x 7″ frame put in place of the furthest right 4″ x 6″ frame pictured…

Once I get them home, I laid them out on the floor just to make sure the layout still looked good in real life and not just my Excel world…

HOORAY!  I still liked the layout, but the hard part was yet to come… I won’t lie to you – the IKEA Ribba frames are very poorly designed.  There’s a reason why they are so cheap.  There are no D-rings on the back, only clips that slide up and down on the vertical part of the cardboard backing.  Therefore, if there isn’t a snug fit of the clip around the cardboard, the clips can easily let the frame sink down on the wall once you hang it.  And, the smaller frames , don’t even come with a set of hanging clips.  Also,  some of the frames tended to lean off the wall at the top.  I was able to solve these problems fairly painlessly.  Here are my tips:

For the artwork, I picked out some of favorite photos and turned them to black and white.    Just to be safe, I laid them out in the Excel file to ensure that the sizes and orientations for each photo were correct.

I placed the order online at the Costco online photo center since I was pretty certain they did 12″x12″ printing.  I was extremely pleased with the price and quality.  In total, all of the pictures were under $15.  Here it is with all of my black and white photos in place!
