Double it for a beautiful, substantial islandBenOur wall kitchen is fairly wide, but after accounting for sink and cooktop, it's a little lacking in bench space. When we bought our apartment we were worried that we weren't going to have enough space to prepare food, and so we placed two Vadholma side by side to create a huge island. The bench space is amazing, and there's so much storage for heavy casseroles, bakingware, servingware, onions and potatoes etc. With basic stools I don't think it is particularly comfortable to sit at, but it's a great height for kitchen tasks. It's really transformed the space. I think about taking off the wood top and painting the black timber all white, but I haven't got around to it yet. Interestingly, as we bought the two islands (same Vadholma model!) at different times, we have noticed that the width of the wooden strips on the top are different between the two by a few millimetres. It's not something that you notice until you look for it, but it's there. Also, they slide around on the wood floor if you lean on it too hard.5
Love itWendyGreat bench, good size. Love that it seats 2. Worktop is attractive. Expensive but I think it’s been worth it. Would recommend you put felt stickers on the bottom of the legs as you assemble as it’s quite heavy once it’s upright.5

Love my new island bench, its perfectTracey M.We bought this about 18 months ago as the house we moved in to did not have enough bench space. Its perfect. Co-ordinates with the black appliances, we were worried about the bench top but it blends with the timber cupboards. I do take good care of it, and we using chopping boards as I don't want the timber damaged. 18 months down the track and it still looks like the day we put it together. We added castors to the legs so we can either push it in to the kitchen or out to the side when we have guests and bring the BBQ table in for further seating. Would buy it again if we ever need to. I also use it as a cutting out bench for sewing, perfect height!! Was easy to assemble (not to many parts lol). About to oil it, but not sure it actually needs it, but I am sure I read that in the instructions. About to check..... GREAT price too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!5

At we have a tradition of trying to utilise materials in the best possible way. For our worktops in thick veneer it means that we combine old craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods. It makes the worktops easier to install, more stable and more resistant to humidity compared to solid worktops. And since we use the whole tree – even the crooked branches and the small twigs – we can save natural resources too.
Wood is a precious natural resource. Even though it’s a renewable material it needs to be handled responsibly. One way to do it, is to use the wood more efficiently. That’s what we do with our kitchen worktops in thick wood veneer.
“At we have a tradition of trying to utilise the materials we have in the best possible way, ” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen worktops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’

“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer, ” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our worktops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid worktop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer worktops.
Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a worktop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen worktops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.
We use constructed boards when manufacturing many of our pieces of furniture, such as tables and wardrobes. They are light yet still stable and strong. Each board has a frame made of chipboard, fibreboard or solid wood, while the inside is a honeycomb filling structure made of mostly recycled paper, which is extra durable thanks to its special construction. The board is then covered with a protective paint, foil or veneer depending on the style wanted.Gather around the kitchen island!
