Here’s the last in my video post series on how to assemble and install parts from the IKEA SEKTION system. I’ve posted about how to assemble a base cabinet and how to assemble a kitchen drawer. Today’s post is my video on attaching the hinges and door of a cabinet. This would work for an upper or lower cabinet.
I created these videos because the black and white instructions that came with the parts of the IKEA SEKTION kitchen were a little vague. They are just drawings. So I thought it would be helpful to other homeowners to show how the kitchen assembly looks in real life. There are way too many different pieces for me to show all of the different instructions, so I made a video for each of the main parts of a kitchen: the cabinet, the drawers, and now the doors.
Doors For Ikea Cabinets
Just a caution as you follow these videos—many of the IKEA SEKTION cabinet pieces are similar but have slightly different directions. Sometimes there are even multiple sets of instructions in one instruction book, and you have to figure out which one works for your pieces. It’s not hard, just be aware that door and hinge I attach in the video may be slightly different from the one you are working on. Most of the steps will be the same, but if there is something different, please follow the instructions that came with your cabinet. Also, if your cabinet has drawers in it, that will affect where you can place your hinges.

Loose or badly fitting kitchen cabinet doors are a common problem. Most cupboards these days use a concealed steel hinge which are sprung so the door stays closed without the need for any catch. They are fairly easy to adjust if you understand how they work.
Adjusting Ikea Cabinet Hinges In Three Easy Steps
Whilst various brands will vary slightly essentially they come in two parts one screws to the door with two door holding screws. The other part screws to the cupboard frame with two cupboard holding screws.
They slot together and are held in place with a locking screw which tightens up to hold the door in place. Some more modern hinges also have a sprung loaded quick release catch so you can remove the door simply by pulling back the catch.
1 Make sure the locking screw C is tight. If this has come loose the door may have slid in or out from its original position as the two parts of the hinge slide against each other. When the door is open as shown aim for approx. a 1mm gap between the door and the cupboard.

2 If this doesn't fix the looseness check the fixed door screws A and the adjustable cupboard screws B Tighten these up. If they won't tighten you may need to discard the original screws and replace them with fatter or longer ones. Make sure longer ones aren't so long that they go right through the wood. Sometimes you may need to fill the holes with good quality two part wood filler to get a good tight connection. (if using filler drill a pilot hole before screwing back in to the filler)
They are usually in slotted holes which mean and you can adjust up or down by a few mm. Then tighten back up
2 Adjust the doors side to side slightly by turning the adjusting screw D on BOTH hinges on each door. You may have to slightly release the locking screw C to do this. Make sure it's tight afterwards.

3 Adjust the angle of a cabinet door with the adjusting screw D but this time only screw either the top or bottom screw. For a bigger adjustment screw the top one way and the bottom the other!!!! You may need to slightly release the locking screw C to do this. Make sure it's tight afterwards.
Look on the side where the hinges are as you close the door. The door may be touching the cupboard frame as it closes.(binding) To stop this you need to adjust the door out towards you slightly. Unscrew the locking screw C on both hinges. The door can now slide in and out a little. Not all floors are perfectly level, which is why you might need to adjust the hinges to level the doors and also achieve consistent spaces between the doors. IKEA's hinges have three screws that control the height, depth, and width by loosening or tightening them.
Cabinet Doors For Ikea Cabinets
When you are adjusting the doors, you should never touch the screws that are used to attach the doors to the frame. Instead, focus on the screws marked in the illustration.
1) The first one moves the door up and down, allowing you to adjust the height of the door. You can decide if you want it closer or further away from the top panel.
2) The second screw has dual purposes. By loosening it completely, you can take the hinge apart, allowing you to attach one part of the hinge to the frame, and one part of to the door before connecting the two. Once you've put the hinge together again, you can decide how far out your door should be from the frame.

3) The third one makes the most significant impact when adjusting your door, straightening it, and evening out the gap to other doors. Adjust this one with a very gentle touch. You tighten this screw by turning it to the left, which may feel counterintuitive. By turning it to the screw to the left, the right side of the door will move upwards.

Ok, but back to the point of this post – tips and tools to make your Ikea cabinet install easier. Some of the tools I’m listing here are absolutely necessary and some are optional (they’ll just make the process easier, faster, and less frustrating). And as you read through this list, I think you’ll also get a pretty good sense of the steps (and curveballs) involved too, which I hope will help as well.
I’ll include a short bulleted list of everything at the end of the post too, that way you can use it as a tool checklist. But let’s just get right into it.
Before you build anything, you’ll want to take time to inventory and organize all of your boxes. We had over 200 boxes (!!!) delivered for our two duplex kitchens, so it helped to sort everything into piles beforehand.
